The volcano

The Maui volcano: what Haleakala is, and how you get up it

The Maui volcano is called Haleakala, it is dormant, and its summit stands at 10,023 feet — 3,055 metres. It is a shield volcano, which means it was built in broad gentle layers rather than thrown up as a cone, and it makes up the whole eastern half of the island. The top of it is a national park, the enormous valley at the summit is floored with cinder cones, and the only practical way up is a paved road that climbs from sea level to ten thousand feet in about two hours. This page is about the mountain itself: what it is, what is up there, what the drive is like, and which of the thirteen listings on this site actually take you onto it, from $208 to $602.

Quick answer

The short answer. The Maui volcano is Haleakala: dormant, 10,023 feet high, and protected as a national park at the top. To stand on it, book $236, our top pick, which is the summit at first light with hotel pickup and breakfast and carries 4.7 from 665 reviews. To walk on it, $208 is our fare from and puts you on two trails on the crater floor with a guide and a picnic lunch. To see the shape of the whole thing at once, $396 is 45 minutes over the crater rim and the east of the island, rated 5.0.

The mountain

What the Maui volcano actually is

Islands in this part of the Pacific are volcanoes with beaches around the edges, and Maui is two of them joined together. The smaller, older one is the West Maui Mountains. The larger one is Haleakala, and it is so much bigger that the Maui volcano, singular, almost always means this one. It rises from the sea floor, breaks the surface, and keeps going to 10,023 feet, with the isthmus of cane and pasture in the middle joining it to its older neighbour.

Shield, not cone. The picture most people carry of a volcano is a steep triangle. That is not what this is. A shield volcano is built by lava that runs far before it cools, so it piles up in wide flat layers and ends up looking, from a distance, like a shield laid on the ground. That profile is why the Maui volcano landscape reads as a long smooth slope from almost anywhere on the island, and why the drive to the top is a road rather than a climb. It is also why the summit feels so much higher than it looks: there is nothing steep to give you a sense of scale.

The summit valley. The Maui volcano crater is not a blast hole. It is an enormous depression at the top, a good deal of it the work of erosion rather than explosion, and standing on its floor are cinder cones — loose, rust-coloured hills of ash and scoria, some of them hundreds of feet high. The floor is lava, sand and cone, with almost nothing growing on it. Walking down into it is the single strangest hour available on this island, and $208 is the listing that does it: two trails with a certified guide, a lava trail, and lunch.

What lives up there. Two things are worth knowing by name. The silversword — ʻāhinahina in Hawaiian — is a plant that grows on this mountain and nowhere else on earth: a low sphere of silver blades that spends years doing nothing and then throws up a flowering stalk taller than a person. The nēnē is the Hawaiian goose, the state bird, and the park is one of the places it survives. Neither is a sight anybody can promise you on a given morning, and both are worth looking for.

And the cloud. The trade winds push a layer of cloud against the eastern slopes, and it typically sits below the summit. That is the mechanism behind every photograph of a sunrise above a white floor, and it is also the mechanism behind the mornings when the layer is higher than usual and the summit is simply inside a cloud. Nobody on this site, and nobody selling a ticket anywhere, can tell you which one you are going to get.

Awake or asleep

Is the Maui volcano going to do anything?

The plain answer is no. Haleakala is dormant. Dormant means a volcano that is not currently active but is not written off as finished either, which is a different category from extinct. It is quiet. It has been quiet for a long time. Nothing about a visit involves lava, heat or smoke, and the ground you walk on in the crater is cold rock.

Why people ask. Hawaii has active volcanoes, they are well covered in the news, and it is easy to attach that coverage to the wrong island. So people search for a Maui volcano eruption today, and they search for Maui volcano eruption 2023 and every other year, and the answer does not change with the year: the activity in the news is not this mountain. A Maui dormant volcano is what you are visiting, and that is exactly why you can walk across the floor of it with a guide and a packed lunch.

What geologists actually watch. Dormant volcanoes are monitored precisely because dormant is not the same as finished, and the instruments are there for the same reason a quiet road still has speed cameras. This site is not going to put dates or intervals in your head that it cannot stand behind. The honest version is the short one: it is asleep, it is watched, and your morning on it is a matter of cold and cloud, not of geology.

And the name confusion. Somebody typing Maui jim volcano is almost certainly looking for eyewear rather than a mountain — there is a well-known sunglasses maker with Maui in its name, and searches for Maui jim volcano sunglasses have nothing to do with a tour of anything. This site sells guided trips and has no connection to that company. Likewise, anyone typing Maui volcano name just wants the word: it is Haleakala.

The road

What the drive up the Maui volcano is like

The Maui volcano drive is the reason a guided listing exists at all. From the coast the road climbs to the summit in something like two hours, and it does it by switchback: a long series of tight bends on an open slope with very little between you and the view. In daylight it is a spectacular piece of road. At three in the morning, in cloud, with a rental car you collected yesterday, it is a different proposition, and it is the single most common reason people hand the driving to somebody else.

The altitude arrives quickly. Sea level to 10,023 feet in about two hours is a fast gain by any standard. Most people notice nothing worse than feeling slightly out of breath walking from the car park to the rail, but it is a real change and it is worth taking gently. The cold arrives just as fast: the summit at first light sits close to zero, and it is normal to step out of a warm vehicle into wind and wish you had brought the other jacket.

What you pass on the way. The road goes up through Upcountry — Kula and Makawao, pasture and eucalyptus and small towns that look more like ranching country than like a beach island. Several listings make a point of it: $236 and $237 both route through the Kula District, and $230 builds the whole afternoon around Upcountry stops before the summit.

Coming down. The descent is the same road in reverse, and it is the part of the day that surprises people: you are back below the cloud by mid-morning with the entire day still in front of you. Some visitors use it for Maui biking down volcano roads instead of riding back in the vehicle, which is what $242 is for — sunrise at the top, then a self-guided run down the switchbacks with Bike Maui. There is a full page on this site about that descent, because it is a genuine ride and not a novelty.

The variables

Four things worth settling before you visit

None of them is the fare. Settle these and the right listing on the Maui volcano picks itself.

Sunrise or sunset

The same summit, two different days

Sunrise means a start in the small hours and a summit that is often above the cloud. Sunset means an afternoon drive and dinner. $236 against $237 is the real decision on this mountain.

Rim or floor

Looking in, or walking in

The viewpoint is twenty minutes. The floor is a hike with a guide, and it is a completely different experience of the same crater. $208 is the listing for it.

How much day you want to spend

Two hours or sixteen

$167 is two hours on the slopes. $259 is twelve hours with the summit, Iao Valley and a distillery. They are not competing for the same visitor.

The cold and the height

10,023 feet is real

Close to zero at dawn, thin air, and wind on an exposed summit. It is the one thing every review mentions and the one thing nobody packs for.

Straight answers

Six things people get wrong about the volcano on Maui

Most of them come from picturing the wrong kind of mountain.

  • 1. Expecting lava

There is none to see. The volcano on Maui Hawaii that people visit is dormant, and the crater floor is cold rock, ash and cinder cones.

  • 2. Thinking the crater is small

It is an enormous valley at the summit with hills standing inside it. From the rim the cones look modest; several of them are hundreds of feet high.

  • 3. Assuming one volcano makes one island

Maui is two shield volcanoes joined by a flat isthmus. The Maui island volcano people mean is the big eastern one; the West Maui Mountains are the older, smaller half.

  • 4. Treating the summit as a warm-weather stop

It sits close to zero before dawn at the Maui volcano summit, and it is windy and exposed. Layers are not optional.

  • 5. Forgetting it is a national park

The Maui volcano park is federally protected, entry is charged separately from any tour, and a sunrise arrival between 3:00 and 7:00 needs its own reservation.

  • 6. Leaving it to the last day

Weather is weather. If you want to visit Maui volcano country with a chance to try twice, book early in the trip rather than late, and lean on free cancellation.

Dormant is not extinct, and the difference is worth ten minutes of reading before anybody tells you otherwise.

Common questions

Common questions about the Maui volcano

What is the Maui volcano called?

Haleakala, written Haleakalā in Hawaiian. It is the eastern half of the island and its summit stands at 10,023 feet, or 3,055 metres.

Is it active?

It is dormant, which is not the same as extinct. Nothing is erupting and nothing about a visit involves lava or heat. This site does not publish dates it cannot stand behind.

How do you get to the top?

By road. A paved switchback climbs from the coast to the summit in about two hours. Guided listings exist mainly because that drive happens in the dark for sunrise, from $236 for our top pick.

Can you walk into the crater?

Yes, with a guide. $208 is our fare from and covers two trails on the crater floor, a lava trail, and a picnic lunch, rated 5.0.

How cold is the summit?

Close to zero at first light. Ten thousand feet of altitude does that, and wind on an exposed summit makes it feel less.

Do I need a park reservation?

The national park requires a separate sunrise entry reservation for arrivals between 3:00 and 7:00, and park entry is charged separately from any tour. What a given listing covers is stated on its own page.

What can I see that grows nowhere else?

The silversword, ʻāhinahina, which grows on this mountain alone, and the nēnē, the Hawaiian goose the park protects. Neither is promised on a given day.

How many listings are gathered here?

Thirteen, from $167 for the Upcountry zipline up to $602 for the long day with the flight across included.
